Shanghai Research Institute of China Post Group, founded in 1964, is a high-tech enterprise committed to science and technology development. It is an important part of China Postal Science & Technology system and plays a key role in China Post. Its total asset amounts to 0.15 billion yuan. Based on the core technologies of pattern recognition and artificial intelligence, the institute has developed many opto-mechatronics equipments, as well as the application and promotion of computer and network technologies. About 200 research achievements have been granted prizes of national, ministerial, or committee level. Up to the present, the research and business areas of the institute cover decision consultancy, design, equipment research & development, and system integration.

　　　
　The institute has about 253 staff, including 44 senior engineers (including 5 professors), 62 engineers, and 45 assistant engineers. It has 2 experts at the state level, 1 specialist at the departmental level, 1 consultant of strategic management from the State Council, and 10 members enjoying special allowance offered by the State Council. It has also got ISO9001: 2000 certificate.

　　The equipments developed by the institute have been widely used in postal industry service, such as the Letter Sorting Machine, the Red-frame Facing Machine, the Cross-belt Sorting Machine, the Sliding-shoe Sorter, the Letter Container Conveying and Storage System, High-speed Flat-mail Feeding System, the Data Processing System in Mail Processing Center, the Intelligent Postcard Ticket Entrance Guard System and various franking machines.

　　In recent years, the institute has produced various kinds of intelligent equipments and opto-mechatronics equipments and has provided the system solution for the clients. The projects developed by the institute, such as the express mail supervision system for CIQ of Shanghai Pudong International Airport and Shenzheng International Airport, the Distributing and Sorting System for Xinhua Bookstore in Zhejiang province and Wuhan, and the sorting machine for social insurance card in Shanghai Social Insurance Centre, are highly appreciated by many clients.

　　The institute is also dedicated to international exchange and cooperation. It has a long-term cooperation with Alcatel of Belgium and Solystic of France and developed the letter sorting machine and the flat letter sorting machine which cover more than 60% market share. Moreover, it has established good relationship with some famous post enterprises in America, France, and Japan, and participates in international tender biddings. The letter sorting machine has already entered the international market.
